Dominque’s story
Dominique is a young carer, living in Staines, Surrey.
She’s 13 years old now, and is a young carer for her brother Micah who was diagnosed with Autism in 2023.
With his Autism, Micah is non-verbal.
What do you do?
I help Mum around the house and help with Micah and my younger brother.
I help make dinner, go shopping for Mum and keep an eye on Micah if Mum is busy with my other brothers.
What do you find most hard about your caring role?
Communicating with Micah is difficult and sometimes I feel exhausted.
I help make dinner, go shopping for Mum and keep an eye on Micah if Mum is busy with my other brothers.

Spending time with Micah 🙂
How have you been helped by the young carers team (Surrey Young Carers) at Action for Carers?
It’s helped me because I get time to myself and I enjoy the activities a lot.
Can you sum up your caring role in 3 words:
Yes, I’d say: difficult, frustrating and helpful.
